About me
Is good visual design going to solve the current financial crises?
Probably not. But it certainly makes the world a nicer place to look at. And somewhere down the line it may even inspire those who will solve the world’s problems. And it is this notion that allows me to sleep well at night.
I’m Chris McIntyre, and I’ve worked in visual design – from graphics and packaging to web design – for over ten years. My clients range from the corporate to start-ups, and my range of work is similarly diverse. But what I truly love is working with individuals and companies who are looking for high quality graphic design that matches and reflects their values and their strengths.
You see, my goals are the same as yours – to connect your company to your customers across all media. Whatever your medium or your message, I have the expertise to help you create compelling communications to promote your brand and the services you offer – from print and packaging to websites and direct mail.
From start to finish, from design to delivery, I can help you get your message where it needs to be. Because what good is your great idea if no one ever hears it?

Total Fitness Solution Branding
Fitness Republic is a newly established resource and community-based site for all aspects of fitness – from nutrition, workouts and recipes to general health information, forums and a store for both nutritional supplements and fitness equipment.
No matter what the user’s fitness level, Fitness Republic aims to bring people of all abilities together to improve their health. As the lead designer from conception to final delivery, my goal was to create a look and feel that matched the optimistic, inclusive and aspirational nature of the company. The design went through two stages, ultimately strengthening the connection to communities and forums.
Fully Implemented E-Commerce Store
Fitness Republic includes an online store divided into three categories: equipment, supplements and DVDs. All the products sold, whether fitness tools or supplements, complement the workouts and nutritional information delivered elsewhere on the site.
As with any e-commerce experience, the entire buying process had to be simple and well organized, from the start to the final click. And with such a width breadth of products available, it was imperative to make the layout as clear and concise as possible for easy navigation. As a result, no matter where you are on the site, every other section is easily accessible – from community website links to suggested items, online help and related FAQs.
DVD Purchase Page
As a comprehensive fitness resource, it’s only fitting that Fitness Republic’s DVD selection also provides links to other products that complement them.
For every DVD available there is a video clip sample and a brief introduction about the featured instructor, along with suggestions for related fitness equipment. By associating the fitness equipment with the DVD, we increase awareness of all the tools we offer to help users with every aspect of their fitness and health.
Recipes Section
The recipe section not only provides a comprehensive database of nutritious recipes, it also gives users the ability to contribute their own healthy dishes and suggestions. Each recipe is categorized by type of cuisine to make searches quicker. Users can also rate recipes to increase their prominence in search results.
The entire look of this section needed to be simple yet effective, and so it mimics the look and feel of a good recipe book – adopting a traditional format that’s familiar to cookbook readers. And no recipe section would be complete without large colour images to stir the user’s imagination and appetite.
Supplement Packaging
As design lead, I was also responsible for package design of all the supplements Fitness Republic offers. To differentiate all the different product lines, packaging was colour-coded based on its purpose. The designs were intentionally spare and simple to keep the focus on each product’s descriptions, benefits and nutritional information.
Fitness Republic Newsletter
To support the Fitness Republic website, additional material was also developed, including eBlasts, print collateral, and the Activ8 newsletter. As with any digital newsletter, information needed to be displayed simply and concisely.
Its main purpose was to introduce readers to topics and subjects that may interest them and then direct them towards the Fitness Republic website for further reading.
Credit Repair and Maintenance Website
Paramount Credit Solutions is a financial services website that helps people repair their credit through major credit bureaus. It offers various service plans, a description of credit-related legal rights and additional credit information.
As the lead designer of the site, I aimed for a no-nonsense look and feel, with a subtle connection to money, from the money tree logo to the use of green throughout the site.
Paramount Credit Solutions E-blast Newsletter
Once users registered their interest in Paramount Credit Solutions, they were sent a digital newsletter as well. Using the same look and feel as the website, with minor design variations, the newsletter’s purpose was to inform the user of the service plans available. Because the average user receives more than 20 emails a day, it’s imperative to convey the message quickly and efficiently by using balanced, well-formatted content supported with appropriate imagery.
Service Plan Registration Page
With financial services websites, it’s always a good idea to put a face to the company to help people feel more at ease. This brings a sense of assurance and security – especially on the registration page, where it’s needed most.
When the user begins to register, the process has to be made simple as possible without any unnecessary distracting links. Stylized menus were used throughout to bring a sense a depth to the site, rather than using conventional text fields. The benefits of each service plan are clearly and concisely displayed before the user moves on to the next registration stage.
Landing Page
In the development of the Paramount Credit Solutions website, a number of other layouts and colour schemes were considered. These were later pared down to the final layout above.
Gateway Newsletter
To complement the marketing strategy, monthly newsletters were also sent out to existing customers.
Complete Website from Concept to Programming
As one of the largest suppliers of RVs in the country, Discover Canada RV needed a website to reflect the quality of their product. Using the great outdoors as natural theme, I designed a site featuring their various locations across Canada.
The site includes a CMS Dealer search, CMS gallery, brochure downloads and product information, as well detailed floor plans for each vehicle.
Client Feedback: ...efficient and offers excellent customer service. Very happy with the end result!
RV Dealer Search
The Dealer search feature was implemented to give the user quick and easy directions to their closest RV dealer. While each Discover Canada RV dealer sells various models, a specific model can also be selected, with the results displayed based on the postal code entered.
The user is given the option of selecting their next closest dealer after the initial result, with distance and address details. Using Google maps, the user is then shown directions to their dealer in more detail.
Detailed Product Illustrations
A complete set of illustrations was designed for various marketing materials, including brochures and newsletters.
The illustrations were also used for the colour schemes of models.
Logo Development
Each model had to be assigned a unique logo that represents the character of the brand.
Canadian themes were used throughout, inspired by our country’s natural landscape, its wildlife and our leisure activities.
The logos were also applied to all marketing materials, including brochures and newsletters.
Product Information
The purpose of the product information page is to introduce the user to a particular model. It features mini-versions of floor plan diagrams and an image gallery with the option for more detailed information, including model specs.
The goal here is to introduce users to the product without going into lengthy detail. After all, no matter how good a website is, its goal is to complement the salesman at the showroom – not replace him.
Combat and Self Defense Gym Website
I was approaced by Sam Lumpini who needed a website for his new Gym in Toronto. Sam has a long history of achievements at the very top level including ranked #1 for kick boxing WKA and as Robert De Nero's bodyguard.
The site is presently going through the first phase of development as it was imperitive for the client to have a web presence quickly in order to attract new customers.
Muay Thai Page
Each of the various style pages include an introduction video and image gallery.
Unique Combat Style Theme Categories
Sam specialises in four martial art styles. To differentiate each one I used a different colour to identify the style which is carried throughout. The is demonstrated on various graphic elements and the schedule.
Image Consulting Identity and Website
Michelle offers one-on-one image consultation with her clients, so the site immediately places users across the table from her through a video introduction, as though she’s engaging them in conversation.
The goal is to create an immediate personal relationship between her and her clients. Michelle also has a particular fondness for taupe – which she specifically requested – so who am I to argue?
Client Feedback: I love my site! Chris was able to take my concept and my preferences, and build something unique, creative and beautiful.
Style Package Options
On the website, the user has four style options to choose from, accessible by four circles at the top of the page.
In the News
Since Michelle really gets around, we decided to create an easily updatable video news section documenting her near-celebrity status on Canadian networks.
Specialist Online Media Website
The client requested a website which visually demonstrates their services. This was achieved placing the entire website inside a monitor and by using iPhone interfaces at either side of the monitor for additional navigation.
Good Old Fashioned Customer Service
An emphasis is put on good customer service which was demonstrated in the old days. This was achieved by using vintage style imagery throughout to tie in the new technology and old customer values.
Food Stylist
Mari-Lou is a food stylist who has worked alongside with major televsion shows, restaurant chains and manufacturers.
Style is everything for Mari-Lou and I wanted to design a stunning yet simple website.
Gallery Page
As with all things culinary, giving users as many photos as possible to see Mari-Lou's designs is always important. Accordingly, I implemented a fully updatable photo gallery so Mari-Lou can change her pictures as often as she likes.
Client List Page
It's always in the best interest to promote present and past clients as it gives potential clients the impression of a well established company.
Video Production Website
Digital 7 is a video production company that produces television commercials, primarily for financial institutions.
Neutral colours along with accents of corporate blue were used to give the website a sharp and distinctive look. The navigation system is icon-based with a scrolling interface for simplicity and easy searching.
Introduction Video Home Page
As with every website, the home page is of paramount importance. It tells users who you are and sets the tone for the rest of the website – and video is an excellent medium for getting that initial message across quickly.
Users are attracted to video more so than text simply because it does most of the work.
Another benefit of an introductory video is that it creates one-to-one contact with the company – invaluable to a newly established company
Links Page
With a company who has been around the block a few times like what Digital has, it's no surprise they have built a solid client base. It's always in the best interest to promote present and past clients as it gives potential clients the impression of a well established company.
Baby Accessory Website
Pea in a Pod Designs specializes in the sale of fashionable slings and other baby accessories. The client requested a light, uncomplicated and fun site appealing to expecting and new parents. It includes an online store with PayPal functionality, safety information and a media section.
Because we were expecting our first baby when I designed it, I had some insight into their target and how I imagined the site would work best. This is reflected in the cartoon-like imagery, and simple navigation and animation.
The baby sling is available in various combinations of outer and inner fabrics and colours, so we gave the user the ability to click on the desired fabric to view all the possible combinations.
Media Page
Most homes with have young children use the refrigerator door for reminders, coupons, IOUs and most importantly, their children’s drawings – so we used that as an inspiration for this section’s design.
When the user clicks on a newspaper cut-out, it enlarges to become more readable and then retracts when clicked again. The post-its are links to external websites that reviewed Pea in a Pod Design’s products.
And to add more some fun, each magnetic letter can be moved around – just like the real thing. The client also specifically asked for all the letters in her name to be displayed, so I happily obliged.
Links Page
As a newly established start-up, the links page is a very important part of the Pea in a Pod website. The baby accessory community in Toronto is very tightknit, with each company linking to the others. This promotes the company in both search engine results and the wider community – not to mention creating a good rapport with similar-minded companies.
CMS Driven Multi Media Website
Focus Media specializes in the production of digital media including video and music.
The client requested complete control over every element of the site’s content. It was designed using bold reds and black, based on the logo, to emphasis content. A demo reel was also used on the home page to immediately give users a brief overview of their services.
Photography Gallery
The site includes a photography gallery, which the client can update and organize by category themselves using a Kohana CMS-based system. Functionalities include a horizontal scrollbar, giving viewers a more user-friendly way to navigate back and forth through photos.
Video Gallery
The same system was used within the video section, allowing the client to update their own videos and categories.
While on holiday in Montreal, my family stayed at Marie-Anne Garnier’s Bed & Breakfast – one of our most memorable vacations in some time. As you enter through the bright red front door, you’re greeting with an amazing dining room and kitchen typical of the Plateau area of Montreal.
When I was later asked to design the website for Marie-Anne, I wanted to give the user the same experience I had when I first walked through the door – that warm, welcoming décor with a delicious breakfast waiting on the table.
Client Feedback: What work, good work, it is beautiful., I couldn't be more happy about it. Thank you so much for your work.
It was a busy year for this client, as he required wedding invitations for the summer and wedding thank-you cards that autumn. The following winter, his second child was born – which meant birth announcements that season and, of course, thank-you cards in the spring.
Bilingual RV Website
Granby Caravane needed a website in English and French to provide information and availability of its assembly of Recreational Vehicles (RVs). They requested a Flash-based site with a unique look different from other RV companies.
This was accomplished with a future-forward theme in promotions, their latest news and a brief video introduction to the company.
Product Page
Each category is separated into model brands displaying an interior gallery. The product section is only intended to give brief information on the product, with links to manufacturers’ sites for more information, if required.
Floor Plan Layouts
Every model page gives users the ability to view a series of floor plans.
The floor plan mini-windows are all embedded into the page, allowing for quick and easy navigation.
Print Sourcing Tool Tutorial
Enfigo is an established print sourcing company that launched a new software application capable of pricing out printing projects through third party companies.
They required a video tutorial to guide users through this step-by-step process that would be engaging and easy to understand – including a live demonstration of the interface to showcase all its features.

Supporting Graphics
To promote the positive aspects of the tool call out graphics were used which are synchronised with the narration.
Rendered Client Visual Proposals
A client required location plans for a proposed development of apartments and restaurants in the Beaches area of Toronto.
As the planning was only at the tender stage, drawings were necessary to help investors understand the concept, so I was commissioned to render the interior design illustrations.
Second Level - Restaurant and Residential Apartment
Various proposals were submitted with a combination of residential and commercial areas. This proposal illustrates the upper level of a restaurant with facilities, a residential loft space and a shared patio area for commercial and residential use.
Second Level - Three Loft Residential Apartments
Proposal illustrating three separate loft residential apartments on the second level.

Isometric Exterior Visual

Wine Bottle Packaging
The great thing about design is its ability to transcend all mediums – from a sophisticated website to simple packaging for a wine bottle.
To create a classic impression for wine bar display cards, each was designed with a subtle colour variation based on the type of wine. On the back of card was a coupon – an effective way to promote without compromising the integrity of the overall packaging.
Country Rock Musician Website
Klaude Walters has been writing songs her entire life, but it’s only recently that she decided to move forward with them and create her first website.
Working closely with Klaude throughout the process, I used her fondness for the countryside as the basis for the illustrations in the design. Every aspect of has sentimental value for Klaude, from the coat hooks down to the horses.
Marketing Collateral
During my time at Toys “R” Us Canada, I had the opportunity to work on several exciting, large-scale projects.
I was involved in the design of all print materials, including the production of English and French flyers, posters for special events and store signage. It was a rewarding experience and a great opportunity to explore the world of high-end corporate design.
Mariposa in the Schools
A logo is equally important as the creative name of company is. Logo designs not only are the symbol of brand but also show how innovative the companies are. The colors and the sense of the logo plays a major part to attract attention to the company.
An understanding of the companies background is vital for the development of a logo which demonstrates the impact for what the company represents.

Theatre Production
During my interior design days I experimented with various spatial mediums including stage design for theatre. One of my projects was to design an entire productions of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
My aim was to create transitional scenes of the opera with each reflecting different emotions being portrayed onstage. For all scenes I incorporated many elements from the cubist movement and in particular Soviet cubism.
Shapes Reflecting Emotion
Throughout the sets I used basic abstract shapes to counteract the Opera's complexity. The majority of scenes have a paper based sculpture as the main backdrop.
Each backdrop is based on shape forms and when combined with various colours it reflects the emotion acted out on stage.
The obtuse shape represents the transformation from evil to good and from good to evil.
First Scene
Demonstrating scale with various viewpoints and materials.
Concept Drawing
I'm a firm believer in the saying 'You don't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been'. This was the first design I created at college all these years ago.
The drawing shows three elevation views of a self standing cafe structure with two levels each containing a semi private area for dining. Influence came mainly from a fellow Scot Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Well done for scrolling down so far and thank you for checking out my work.
